Chemical dependency is a disease that profoundly affects interpersonal relationships among all of the family members of an individual who is addicted. Healing from addiction, therefore, often requires treatment of the intimate and family relationships of patients who are receiving services at The Mind Store. In treating intimate relationships, Behavioral Couples Therapy is offered. This treatment is the only empirically supported treatment developed to date for couples in which one or both of the individuals suffer(s) from chemical dependency. The treatment entails teaching couples how to talk about and support each other in a non-codependent way while going through treatment. Couples are also guided toward acquiring or re-applying behaviors that lead to both partners feeling cared for. In addition, couples are guided in how to increase engagement in mutually pleasant activities, how to make requests for behavior change, and how to solve problems.

Research on Behavioral Couples Therapy has demonstrated that when couples successfully complete this treatment, the chance of having sustained remission from addictive behaviors is significantly increased. In addition, partners are significantly more likely to resolve conflict in non-violent ways and their children are more likely to have improved psychological health.

When working with families, the clinicians at The Mind Store employ many of the same cognitive-behavioral interventions that are used in working with couples. Through providing communication skills training, helping families establish and maintain healthy boundaries, teaching effective strategies for resolving conflict, and assisting members in establishing or re-establishing healthy family rituals, the family as a whole is assisted in healing from the disease of chemical dependency.
